System Dynamics Modelling

System dynamics (SD) is a computer-aided approach to understanding complex systems over time using e.g. flows, causal loops and time delays. Below are descriptions, video tutorials and links to System Dynamics modelling.

Introductory Video to SD with Dr. Erik Pruyt

System Dynamics is a computer-aided approach for modelling and simulating dynamically complex issues and systems characterised by feedback and accumulation effects. It simulates system behaviour over time with models used to experiment in a virtual laboratory. It is used for models-based policy analysis and adaptive policy design with the following functions:

  • System Dynamics Modelling is able to address complex social and technological policy problems related to such areas as Health, Energy, Infrastructure, Resources, Management and Climate Change.

  • It identifies the root causes of problems and solves them by testing their robustness across a wide range of assumptions.

Dr. Erik Pruyt has been lecturing System Dynamics and other modeling courses at Delft University of Technology's Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management since 2007.

Building a Simple Vensim Model

A quick tutorial on building and running a new Vensim model using industrial strength simulation software for improving the performance of real systems. Vensim's rich feature set emphasizes model quality, connections to data, flexible distribution, and advanced algorithms. Configurations for everyone from students to professionals.

Vensim Causal Loop Diagramming

This video shows several ways to build causal loop diagrams in Vensim. We start simple with Vensim PLE, and then illustrate some additional features, like navigation links, that are possible in DSS. The first ten minutes should have you up & running on the basics.

Data Science, Connected to the Bottom Line

Vensim can be used to put big data in context, by incorporating the learnings from big data in simulations that account for organizational structure and finances. Vensim can also do data intensive simulation, with flexible I/O, advanced algorithms for calibration, optimal filtering, confidence bounds and Monte Carlo simulation.

Translating Vensim models to Ventity
